This blog is written by Erik Vestin, PhD candidate in political science, at the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The department hosts the Swedish National Election Studies, and my thesis work will be in that vein.
The title of the blog is also the preliminary title of my thesis. I will set out to investigate certain ideas, common at least in Swedish public debate, that some group of people called 'the middle class' is particularly important in modern elections. This means an inquiry into questions of the development of the class structure in post industrial society, class formation, and the possibilities of party strategy in electoral competition.
The blog works more or less as an open notebook for my thesis project, where I put up excerpts and notes from articles and books that I read, links to relevant texts and data, and various free form reflections. Eventually, there will be a page for working papers from the project as well. Even though the notes may sometimes take a rather cryptical and introvert form (since I would assume this blog won't have too many readers), comments are certainly most welcome.
